Over the past year, the Lord has taken me on a journey of learning how to take care of my health and honor Him with my body. Throughout this journey, He has stretched me beyond my comfort zone and taught me so much. I have found that I place a lot of importance on honoring God with my finances, my time, and my belongings, while honoring God with my body falls on the back burner. One look at Scripture reminds me that this should not be the case.
Giving our bodies to the Lord by nourishing our temples with a nutritious diet and consistent exercise is one of the most important gifts and acts of worship we can give to God.
In the letters to Corinth, Paul reminds us again and again that our bodies are temples!
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.” -1 Corinthians 3:16-17
If we are not in a healthy physical condition or making efforts to be healthy, we are hindering the fulfillment of God’s purpose for our lives on earth. We are filled with the Holy Spirit; we are fearfully and wonderfully made, created in His image and filled with His potential and His spirit which raised Jesus from the dead. We were not put on the planet to exist but to be highly effective for the glory of God.
We have a body. But it does not belong to us. I’ve noticed that so many people become wrapped up in health and fitness for their personal goals, for their self-image, and for their individual gain. Now, I’m not knocking goals or even exercising to feel better… but I think we all need a reminder of our “why.” Why am I doing this? Not for me, oh no. This body is not my own- I am simply a steward of it. What a big responsibility! I may be just one girl in the fitness realm, but health and wellness is the Lord’s.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” -1 Corinthians 6:19-20
As Rick Warren said, “God created it. Jesus died for it. I better take care of it.” We are always in a temple. Let’s glorify God by always worshiping! Here are three easy and affordable ways to practice temple care in your life:
1. Drink more water!!
Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to nourish your temple. Drinking lots of water increases brain power and provides energy, boosts immunity, cleanses toxins, improves complexion, prevents injuries, and so much more!
2. Take a walk. Every day.
There is so much research available regarding the benefits of walking. A short walk each day (aim for about 30 minutes) helps maintain a healthy weight; prevents heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes; and improves mood!
3. Read your Bible.
Get in the Word. Every day. Spending time with the Father is undoubtedly the BEST choice for not only your physical and spiritual health, but your life in general!
I am praying for you as you begin to worship God with your body and so excited to see how the Lord moves in your life as you join me in Temple Care!
